We had a fabulous Member’s Day meeting – all organised ‘in house’ – for which we owe a big ‘thank-you’ to Joanna MacMahon and her committee.
Before the meeting we had a Bring and Buy table which raised over £200 for our charity of the year, Parkinsons UK (NI branch).
We were also collecting materials for Uganda and Helen, Catherine and Marjorie will be flying to Uganda in March with cases full of supplies donated by our members.
The prizes from last year’s exhibition were awarded by Joanna MacMahon (Chair) to Vicky Tolson (left), Irene MacWilliam (behind quilt!) and Colette Gaffikin (right), all pictured with their winning pieces. Vicky won the Thelma Goldring award for ‘traditional work interpreted in a contemporary way’. Irene won the President’s award – selected by committee from work exhibited in the Guild exhibition, and Colette won the Theme Prize for work that reflected the theme of the 2017 exhibition ‘Cloth and Colour’.
I gave the talk for member’s day and showed slides featuring the final degree show work of some of the wonderful Textile Art, Design and Fashion students I had the privilege of teaching last year. I also talked about the communal project that was my daughter’s wedding – making the wedding dress (and growing the flowers from seed!) With 3 generations working on the dress, it acquired its value from the process rather than the materials – it was about the time spent sewing, chatting and working together. We recycled the lace from an old sample dress that we picked up for £25 in a charity shop – we separated the lace from the original dress, cut out the lace motifs, and then rearranged and couched them onto the tulle of a new dress. The dress has all our shared memories sewn into its hundreds of metres of hand-stitch. I finished a 250 metre spool of thread, wore my needle into a curve that fitted my hand and cultivated a little hard callous that made a thimble redundant – and the garden was full of flowers until October.
Then following our member’s lunch we had an afternoon of workshops led by 4 of our members:
Christine Andrews – hand stitching.
Sheelah Peile – printing with shaving foam.
Yvonne Willaims – free machine embroidery.
Irene MacWilliam – screen printing cloth.
